Blog Archive MBA News Grade Disclosure Policy Changes at Columbia Business School Columbia Business School (CBS) students recently voted to implement a grade nondisclosure policy, which will take effect on August 1, 2011. A record 91% of MBAs and EMBAs participated in the vote, with 77% of the student body opting to approve the nondisclosure of grades, GPAs, and transcripts to an employer  until a student has accepted a full-time position with the employer. However, students are allowed to disclose the receipt of academic honors such as inclusion on the Dean’s List and membership in honor societies. Individual students still have the legal right to decide for themselves whether to disclose their grades, but the new norm at CBS will be for students to keep their grades private. What the effect of this change will be on corporate recruiting at CBS is unclear, but the schools students overwhelmingly supported the idea. The student body recently communicated the policy change to recruiters, indicating that they believe that “grade nondisclosure promotes greater risk-taking, teamwork, experiential learning, and community building in the classroom, resulting in more well-rounded graduates, better employees, and stronger leaders.” We hope the grade nondisclosure change has the positive impact they anticipate! Or is it just a misconception since research states otherwise, â€Å"The Stanford report, an analysis of 237 studies of organic produce, meats and dairy foods, concluded that organic foods are no more nutritious than their conventional counterparts.† but why do many people still believe organic is better? To start things off, organic food is when food lacks pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, antibiotics etc. Processes or conventional food is the exact opposite of organic food. From what we know, processed food is no different from organic food when it comes to nutritional values. Organic food is just more expensive and is absent of pesticides and hormones. Despite having the same nutritional value and being cheaper, processed food might have some harmful effects too. There are some foods that should not be eaten, if they are conventionally grown such as apples, strawberries and spinach. Eating these conventionally grown foods can cause risks from the pesticide used on the plants. However the risk depends on the produce and the amount of pesticides used and the area it was grown. The location has to do a lot with how a plant is grown. As you can see there are risks and benefits to both types of growing. So how do we make a decision on which is better for us? The rodent dropping are known to transmit pathogens that lead to diseases such as salmonellosis and Hantavirus (Trampel, Darrell, Thomas Richard, 357). All the kitchen equipment used in food preparation should be cleaned and dried prevent contamination and rusting. I'll probably regret that I didn't go later on but, I just couldn't handle it right now. Brandon we' re home. Yea Mom I'm upstairs, do you think that anyone has moved into the Smites house yet? No I don't think so, why? Because all the lights are on. Also there is a car that looks like the Smites in the driveway. You know that is impossible their car was totaled in the accident. The police had to cut the car in half to get the three bodies out. Well don't worry about it. You know we just came from their funeral it must be someone from the real estate company who has a car like John and Beth had. Why don't you come down and eat. We stopped and got pizza. Sounds great I'll be down in a minute. Gosh mom why did you get all this pizza? Are you expecting company? No Brandon, if we don't finish it tonight, I'll put the left over pizza in the refrigerator. Sure mom, like we're going to finish it all tonight. I wouldn't be so sure, I think you are in for a surprise tonight. Hey.. uh mom what's that old grungy book doing on the table? This had me stupefied because we usually only pray when it's a special dinner or holiday But when mom picked up the freaky book I was alarmed and fearful of what she planned on doing! I saw that she had opened it to the Vs and was looking at the word vecino in capital letters. Mom was acting very strange. She told my father and I to hold hands with her in a circle around the table. She then continued, telling us to repeat after her. Her words were not familiar to me as she said sim sim sala beem. We all repeated, again sim sim sala beem. After what seemed like twenty minutes of repeating these odd words and phrases mom stopped. I felt a cold gust of winter air blow down my spine. I found this unbelievable as it was a hot August evening. I was really ready for the pizza, as it was getting cold, especially with the cold blast of arctic air blowing through the house. Just as I was about to dig in, mom said wait for the guests. What guests, I didn't know any one was coming over! Who could it be, mom and dad's best friends were dead!! DING DONG the doorbell rang, I don't think I'll ever get to eat. I hate pizza warmed in the microwave. Mom said Brandon why don't you get the door I reluctantly agreed. As I approached the door I could see the outline of three people. One looked to be about my age with long hair. As I opened the door to see who was keeping me from my dinner, I almost fell over. I personally feel it is what this country is based on(pilgrims came here to escape beer persecution but, that is a whole other topic of discussion.) There are so many different flavors and brands of beer on the market. Nonetheless, it was not hard for me to choose a couple for this present debate: what do individuals value in a beer? The two I have chosen just happen to be my favorites: Bass and Guiness. Personally, in a beer, I look for a couple of things. First, of course, is taste. This may sound self-defeating to some that have not acquired the taste for beer but, take it from a bartender, beer sells because people like the way it taste! What it all comes down to is what flavor or brand you are accustomed to. Although, I do see many people that stick to one particular brand, and are too reluctant to try something new. The second property I look for in a beer is build. Many beers on the market, I feel, are too flat. Especially light beers. They often seem watered down. A beer needs to have a little build. That is you need to feel it going down. I call it beer personality. When one thinks of a typical beer, most likely a picture of Bass would be the end result. A beer with a nice flavor and build, amber colored, that is very smooth going down. I have yet to sell a coustomer a glass of Bass that did not like it. It forms a nice rich head (bartender talk for the foam on top), and compliments any meal. The Sirens of Titan Marek Vit "It took us that long to realize that a purpose of human life, no matter who is controlling it, is to love whoever is around to be loved." (Vonnegut:220) The Sirens of Titan is Kurt Vonnegut's second novel. He has written it in 1959, seven years after his previous Player Piano. It has been described as a pure science fiction novel and, after only one reading, it really can be considered to be one. The intricate plot and fascinating detail may obscure the serious intent of the novel. If compared to other novels by this author, it makes much smoother reading because there are much fewer subplots, digressions and simultaneous developments. The storyline of Sirens of Titan is much more straightforward than in the other works (e.g. Slaughterhouse-Five, Galapagos, Hocus Pocus, Breakfast of Champions etc.) "The Sirens of Titan, for all its wonderings, futurity and concern with larger, abstract questions, transmits a greater sense of direction and concreteness. Rather surprising, too, is the fact that the novel with its science fiction orientation, with its robots and near-robot humans, and with its several central characters who are intentionally presented as being rather cold-hearted, generates more human warmth than Player Piano which is directly concerned with the agonies of exploring and following conscience, emotion and love. Three possible explanations for this fenomenon present themselves: first, Vonnegut's skill has grown in the intervening seven years; second, the science fiction mode affords the author more detachment, and he is less didactic in this work; third, the positive forces, particularly love, carry more weight."
